The move comes amid a wider shake-up within the Joint Chiefs of Staff as several officers face the end of their terms.
On Thursday, President Joe Biden named senior Air Force officer General CQ Brown as the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs. If confirmed, he will replace General Mark Milley.
The move means the White House must now pick a new Air Force chief of staff.
Last month, General Randy George, the Army’s deputy chief of staff, was tapped to replace General James McConville as the army’s senior officer. Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Mike Gilday, is also facing the end of his term. His successor has not yet been named.
