February 28-March 2

The opening event of the meeting took place in the Salone de quintecento, the main hall of the Palazzo Vecchio, a major historic attraction in Florence, Italy.

The first speaker, Mr. Dario Nardella ,the Mayor of Florence, was introduced by the founders of LTCA, Drs W. Reichman and I. Gonen. In his welcoming presentation, the Mayor pledged the city’s commitment to the well-being of its senior citizens, and declared Florence a laboratory for the care of the elderly. He called for the members of LTCA and the stakeholders to view Florence as their Beta-site. The evening ended with a selection of arias performed by artists from the Scala Opera House in Milan,    and words by Maestro Alberto Veronesi, president of the Puccini Festival .

The two days of deliberations consisted of panels of experts in different areas related to the care of elderly, interspaced by plenary sessions.

The first day started with a plenary session that ventured into speculations regarding the genetics of aging, and how to postpone frailty beyond 100 years of age. The panels considered the advantages and hurdles in using assistive technologies to provide medical care for the elderly at home, the need for creative financial models to cover longevity costs, and treat the frailty associated with advanced age. The day ended with a visit by the LTCA leadership at the Fiesole-based MENARINI Foundation, which focuses on the education of health-care personnel. The visit resulted in a preliminary accord of cooperation between the two organizations, towards producing and implementing educational material for caregivers to the elderly world-wide.

The second day was devoted to defining the role of LTCA, agreeing on future initiatives and establishing working committees to be active between annual meetings.  Members of the  committees have already started to exchange ideas and produce documents that would constitute the blueprint of ongoing LTCA activities.
