The individual referred to at the center of the claims, President Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden, reached a detailed settlement Tuesday in a Delaware court filing in which he pleaded guilty to a pair of tax charges for minor offences.
But several Republicans, including the chairman of the oversight committee James Comer (R-Ky.), immediately criticized the deal as a « love affair » and vowed to pursue his months-long investigation into Hunter’s affairs.
Under a unique section of the tax code reserved for chairs of congressional tax writing committees, which was used last year by Democrats to release former President Donald Trump’s tax returns, Smith could publicly release any tax information private owned by Hunter Biden by majority vote.
While it was unclear what documents should be considered on Thursday and what the committee’s plans are, Smith said in a statement that « we will follow where the facts lead and release the appropriate details later. »
