LONDON – This week Donald Trump and Boris Johnson discussed « the situation in Ukraine and the vital importance of a Ukrainian victory, » according to a spokesman for the former British prime minister.
Johnson, ousted from office last year, has been touring America to try to rally support among top Republicans for Ukraine in the wake of Russia’s invasion.
Pro-Ukrainian think tanks hosted the former British leader for a private lunch in Texas this week, where he told a gathering of politicians, donors and captains of industry that America must stay the course in its support for the country .
Talking to the Republican leader appears to have been next on the list.
THE The New York Times first reported it that Trump — who has faced scrutiny whether he supports Russia or Ukraine in the conflict and has promised to resolve the war in 24 hours — was planning to host Johnson for dinner. Trump told CNN earlier this month, “I want everyone to stop dying. They are dying. Russians and Ukrainians. I want them to stop dying »
The meeting took place on Thursday and a spokesman for Johnson revealed talks with Ukraine were on the menu.
« The Rt Hon Boris Johnson MP met with President Donald J Trump to discuss the situation in Ukraine and the vital importance of a Ukrainian victory, » the spokesman said.
Trump and Johnson had a complex relationship when both men were in office. The former US president has described Johnson as a « friend » and once branded him « Britain Trump » — but the two have appeared to have drifted apart politically in recent years.
Trump told GB News last month that he believed Johnson’s government had taken an « extreme left » slant, bashing his support for wind farms and other green policies.
« There really aren’t any Conservatives left, » he said of Johnson’s ill-fated administration.
